A Fun Friday Potpourri Post

Happy Friday everyone! I just wanted to do a quick 3 shot “link love” fest on a couple unrelated (but relevant) things. Hope everyone had a sweet week, and is looking forward to an all-star weekend.

Hah, that sounds so lame and funny to me for some reason…

“I’m gonna have an all-star weekend! Someone give me a high five! Don’t leave me hangin’, brah!”

My weekend looks like its full of rain, but its been raining for the past 2 months here, so we’re used to it by now. Anyways…

Mark’s Daily Apple – The Definitive Guide to Saturated Fat

Mark Sisson’s Primal site, which is always full of great information for the Primal Blueprint follower and low-carbers alike, has a great (long) write up on the much demonized topic of Saturated Fat.

If you look through his archives, sometimes I think Mark should do a post that’s the “Definitive Guide to Definitive Guides“. Just kidding, guys.

Protein Power – Bantings Letter on Corpulence

In what is considered the first low-carb diet book of all time (published in 1864), is actually just a bound letter / pamphlet written by William Banting who wasn’t a doctor at all just a satisfied dieter. To quote Dr Eades synopsis:

William Banting (1797-1878) was a middle-aged undertaker living in London who had become obese. He sought the help of multiple physicians and other practitioners who prescribed a variety of remedies for him, none of which worked.

Banting finally fell into the hands of a physician who recommended a low-carb diet, or, in the words of the time, a diet lacking in starch and saccharine (sugar and sugar-sweetened foods) matter.

He took to his new diet with a gusto and began for the first time to lose substantial amounts of weight. As the months wore on, his fat dropped off. After about a nine months he had lost 35 pounds (which made a large difference as he was only 5′ 5″ banting-photo.jpgtall) and was ecstatic. In fact, he was so fired up and had had enough people ask him about his regimen that he decided to publish at his own expense a small, bound pamphlet describing his own experiences that he could pass out gratis to anyone who wanted one.

Its a great little read – amazing that he was about 150 years ahead of his time.

Girl Gone Primal – Carnivore Week Continues

Check out Jezwyn’s blog – she’s a devout Primal follower and has recently been experimenting on an all-meat diet for over a week now. Plus she takes pictures of her meals, and who doesn’t like some great “meat shots” (oh, wait, that sounds so wrong..). Anyone who is interested in the “Zero Carb” world (a world I visit often, oddly enough), there is lots of good info on the site.

As a fun little side-fact – I totally got into a mini argument at GNC yesterday with an overly enthusiastic employee about carbs and fiber. she was hardcore and unwavering in her (corporate sponsored) view-point, so I have to give her credit for that. For the rest of the day I was totally amused – “Wow, what kind of weird life is this?” Hah.

Cheers everyone! I’m off to do a few rounds on the heavy bag (Boxing) and then weight training – since I am fortunate enough to have today off from work, so I might as well be semi-productive. (Besides, I have to prepare for low-carb happy hour)
