A Wet Fun Friday afternoon – Odds and Ends

Ah, Another week gone by – some good food eaten, some bad. Thankfully the good outnumbers the bad by an mile (But that Absolut Vodka last night certainly didn’t help – it may have zero carbohydrates, but it has its own issues and side effects. Heh Heh) I hope all of your are up to goodness (or up to no good) this weekend, and I also hope you don’t have any rain. I hate to be a sad-sack complainer, but its literally rained 6 days a week here (Albany, NY) all summer with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

This isn’t Seattle, London, or some other place where it rains constantly. Its upstate New York for craps-sake! Oh, well, maybe it will just do down as the legendary “summer we all stayed indoors”.

Anyways, enough complaining from me – here’s a fun little round-up sampling of posts from this past week that I enjoyed and wanted to share.

Protein Power – Disney Small World ride a casualty of the obesity epidemic

Dr Eades sent a few days in DisneyLand recently (much do his dismay), and was able to get a few eye-fulls of America’s obesity epidemic first-hand – not to mention an interesting aside about the Small World ride and expanding American asses.

If Disneyland is any indication, there is no question we’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic.  I tried to make some kind of semi-accurate estimate by doing little statistical analyses when  was waiting around for rides.  It looked to me that about 40 percent of adults were out and out obese, some morbidly so.  And I would estimate that of the folks who weren’t actually obese, at least 85 percent of them were overweight. A normal weight adult at Disneyland was a rarity.

Low Carb Lindsey – Should I Switch Diets

Here is a refreshing and personal video-blog entry from Lindsey regarding how we should handle ourselves when our weight loss begins to slow down and we start to feel frustrated. I like this simply because we’ve all been there and have had that kind of “What Now” feeling when we don’t seem to be losing just like we want to. (Lindsey follows the Atkins style of low-carb dieting and is currently in the induction phase)

Carnivore Health – What’s Wrong with Paleo

One of my favorite blogs lately – tackles an interesting phenomenon that is witnessed with any of the low-carb type diets (Primal, Paleo, Zero Carb Carnivore, etc.). Its human nature that we get bored with eating a certain type of thing and start to become “inventive” and create all kinds of bastard foods that may technically fit into our “dietary niche” (be it Primal, Atkins, etc) but are certainly not as good for your as they should be… in essence, give a dieter long enough, and they’ll find ways to “Cheat Legally”, here is an example from Danny Roddy’s post:

As the months went by I noticed something strange. The meat and veggie meals I had started with slowly vanished making way for strange frankenfood concoctions made out of sugar free bakers chocolate and coconut flour. It wasn’t long before every meal had to have several sweet elements, whether it was a pumpkin whey shake or a cinnamon and stevia sweetened egg pancake.

Food Renegade – Fight Back Friday – July 31st Edition

In what is a staple of my low-carb & primal type reading – here is todays link-fest. I highly reccomend you check it out, if not only for the quality posts on Food Renegade but for their great ability to aggregate and filter that chaff out for truly “robust” Friday link posts (mine tend to be things that struck a chord with me personally, or things that are truly entertaining).

As always I hope you all have a great weekend and thanks for reading – I’ve got some great stuff coming up so “stay tuned” as they say.

(for the record, I really tried to find a good pic of Rocky running up the famed steps in the rain, but I couldn’t so – here he is running up those same steps…. with a dog, in the snow… so close, yet so far)
