Wednesday Question: What is your favorite low-carb treat?

This is a great quick question – Personally, I’m going to name two.

First off, I love berries. They aren’t the LOWEST of carb choices, but you’d be surprised how low the Effective Carb Count (ECC) is of some blackberries and strawberries (7g and 9g respectively – for a full cup), not to mention all the antioxidants they give you. Note that I said ‘berries’, not simply ‘fruit’ – last week I read on some website (the name and URL escapes me right now) referred to fruit as “candy bar that hangs from a tree”, and for most fruit, that isn’t too far off. Most berries are another story though.

Secondly, celery sticks and Marie’s Chunky Blue Cheese dressing (I’m sure there are better brands out there, but Maries is the one I usually end up with). An entire celery stick is only about 1g ECC, and the blue cheese is none. Crunchy, tasty, and barely an insulin response to be had – can’t beat it.

On a funny side note – I originally titled this post “Whats your favorite low-carb snack?”, then I had to change it because, honestly, I’ll cook up 8 eggs into an omelet or scramble them and call it a “snack”, I know some of you more “Primal” eaters can vouch for that one too. “Treat” has more of a sweet connotation, which is what I was really going for.

So, whats you favorite low-carb treat?

Those Marie's dressings are so yummy. I also love the blue cheese but since we are trying to avoid all soy and canola oils and byproducts we had to toss them. I am amazed at how difficult it is to find salad dressings or dips without some form of soy or canola in them. Try looking for and olive oil or coconut oil based dressing - even at our local health food store these do not exist! Our celery sticks now get dipped in the blue cheese and pecan dip from Trader Joe's - try it and you'll be hooked! Having to resort to making Mayo at home. A couple of the big brands have started advertising Mayo with Olive Oil but the first ingredient on the list is still soybean oil!

Favorite low carb snack - Avocado Chocolate Pudding!
  • Hey Candy,

Yeah, sadly, I assume because of the soybean oil - there has to be some transfats in Maries Blue Cheese dressing. It says "0g TransFat", but we all know that really means is "<1g Transfat".

Blue cheese and Pecan dip from Trader Joes? Now that sounds VERY intriguing!

Here in southern Cali there is a bakery called Julian's Bakery and they sell 1 carb bread! I like making french toast with it! Yummo!
  • Nice! Wow, low-carb French Toast would be amazing.. Yummo indeed! :)

My biggest hurdle is trying to find something to eat in the house (that consists of a carb hungry boyfriend and 2-18month olds that eat Pepperidge Farm Goldfish 24/7) quickly when I want to grab and run. I normally prepare my omelets for breakfast the next day at night, but the weekends are hard because there is no structure (read:no work).

Any ideas on what to eat quickly, that doesn't go bad too quickly?
  • I usually keep pepperoni, cheese, cold cuts, etc around so there is always something to munch on. Sometimes I get ambitious and get pork loins (if they're on sale anyways), cook them up and stick them in the fridge. Few minutes in the microwave and its practically a meal, forget "snack".

Lots of low-carb books and whatnot say that pork rinds are a good snack - but I've never really enjoyed them, so your mileage may vary there.

I'm right there with you on the berries and celery, I usually dip mine in some kind of salsa, or almond butter.
  • Yeah, Blackberries are amazing. Besides, they always remind me of being in the woods eating wild ones as a kid. I don't know what kind of "fruit steroids" they use to get the store bought / farmers market ones to be 10x the size of wild ones - but hey, I'm not complaining.

Bet you a dollar this won't be mentioned again, but I love anchovy stuffed olives!

    Sounds awesome!
  • Nice! How "unique", Doc. : ) Makes me think of bacon wrapped scallops - now THAT'S a treat we can all get behind! I just wish they didn't take so long (or make my whole kitchen smell like scallops for days).

    Cheers!

Must say it has become Pemmican! My own home made stuff, or from Us Wellness Meats, but I actually consider it a staple AND a treat. Been 83 days since I've anything other than animal sourced foods (Zero Carb, baby!) and I think something as decadent as a berry would put me in a coma!
  • Hey Tim, This is probably an easy question - but whos Pemmican is better? Yours or the US Wellness Meats ordered stuff? I assume they're slightly different mixes too... (?)
  • timrangitsch
I like the US Wellness alot! But I've made batches every bit as good as theirs. I've been using a bunch of elk, deer and antelope meat, so my home made stuff varies wildly (hah, "wild" get it?). For the bike rides I do, the saltier the better. A fella named Danny Roddy (dannyroddy on twitter) has pemmican and jerky production down pat:

  • Berries are utterly unbeatable, especially when topped with buttery toasted nuts and pure cream...

And yet, usually when I think of berries I get a deep pang of craving, but now, one week into my carnivore experiment, I don't feel even a flutter. I know they taste good, but my body also knows that it doesn't need the sugar... Cool!

Still, once I'm back to low-carby Primal goodness, that will be my socially-lubricating dessert of choice for dinner parties, once again.
  • Hah. Berries = The original "socially-lubricating dessert". Sounds SO dirty, yet so right. :)

In terms of the carnivore experiment - I don't blame you, I'd probably rather have a huge steak than anything that came from a tree or a plant (unless it was an ANIMAL that fell out of the tree, that is)
